What Makes a Stainless Steel Austenitic
A stainless steel is classified as austenitic when its microstructure consists predominantly of the austenite phase, a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure. This structure is stabilized by the presence of high chromium (16–26%) and nickel (6–22%) content, often enhanced with elements like manganese and nitrogen. These alloying elements prevent phase transformation during cooling, keeping the steel tough, ductile, and non-magnetic at all temperatures.
